wise words from RC Sproul
"We can have heads full of knowledge that never penetrates our hearts, but our hearts can't fully adore the Lord unless we love Him with our minds."
"Yet Jesus tells us to love God with heart and mind. (Matthew 22:37) We can't love anyone we don't know - even our great God. Burning hearts are not nourished by empty heads"
its been a long time since ive heard something that i totally can relate to! and its so true! i know that God works with me through my mind and what i know about Him to convict me on how i should love Him. it just seems absurd to me that anyone would not feel the same way... i guess you could say that people learn differently, some may not need to dig so deep and find out every detail of why a verse is there or why it isnt, but i dont know if it is just a lack of interest or is it "simple faith"?
what i mean is, if you have this book that you love, for example the last book of harry potter. if you see this strange statement lying in the middle of nowhere, wont you be compelled to try to find out what it means? or will you just ignore it, cos maybe its not that important.
chances are that you will be wondering what it means because, what if knowing it changes everything? its not just there for nothing.. Same goes for the Bible! i'm sure that verses in the bible are not there to confuse or just be plain random.. i think God puts them there, so that we CAN understand them
so what exactly is having "simple faith"? i think it is believing in the unseen, on account of the limited things that you have seen.
not sure how that fits into the idea of "knowing God with out hearts and minds"! maybe it just shows how even if there are some things that we cannot figure out right now, because due to the limited nature of the human brain, we cant know everything! but even then, that we should still trust in God's purposes, because they are good. i dont think you can go to the extent of having little interest in the bible, because its
the very words of God to us! but its more of: Youve done all you can, but you still do not understand. so you just leave your "unknowns" in His hands and take the leap of faith.
its hard sometimes to have simple faith. because of what youve seen, you assume that God is going to give you clear direction to your decisions in life, because He has shown so much to you in the Bible. but sometimes you do not get a clear cut answer! in such situations, its safe to say that whatever decision you make, if its out of pure motives and its in accordance to the Bible, that God will be pleased.
so yeah, you out there, continue to love God with your heart and mind! may He give us all the passion to seek out the understanding of His word, and not just stop there, but help us to love Him on a deeper level with each new understanding! (:
