i'm in the last few chapters of the book "The Things of Earth" (like, finally???), and came across a part of the book which was very helpful to me!
"As we eagerly await the new heavens and the new earth, we ought to soberly and seriously ask questions such as:
If you could have heaven, with no sickness, and with all the friends you ever had on earth, and all the food you ever liked, and all the leisure activities you ever enjoyed, and all the natural beauties you ever saw, all the physical pleasures you ever tasted, and no human conflict or natural disasters, could you be satisfied with heaven, if Christ was not there?
And if our answer is yes, then we ought to fear for the state of our souls. Christ is not glorified in our enjoyment of his gifts apart from his presence. To desire a Christless heaven is to commit a subtle and suicidal form of idolatry, one that will not commend us to God on the last day."
To be honest, this was a tricky question to answer for me. I think it was because it came after the part about how death leads us to enjoy treasures beyond our imaginations, because what is heavenly will surpass everything that we know on earth. So yeah, i was imagining and all, then I forgot that heaven is not about just enjoying these gifts, but it is all about our relationship with Christ!
When all these things fade away, it will all just be down to whether or not I love Christ, or do I love my own plans for my life more?
Thank You for this revelation and reminder which struck my heart like a knife!
